Master Evelyn Reiko de Smedt

After studying and practising Sanskrit and yoga for a few years, she became interested in Eastern spiritualities and contributed to various publications on inner research, notably ‘Planète’ in January 1972.

In January 1973, she met Master Taisen Deshimaru in a workshop in the 14th arrondissement of Paris where he taught the Way of the Buddha: zazen.

An increasingly strong and intimate bond was established with her master and in March 1975 she was ordained as a nun. She also helped him to write and publish most of his works in French.

Since the death of her master, she has continued to spread his teachings through the sesshins that she leads and her books, notably Zen et Christianisme, La Lumière du satori (published by Albin Michel), Zen Album illustré in collaboration with M. Bovay and L. Kaltenbach, and Les Patriarches du Zen.

In 2005, she founded the Mokuonji temple, the Hermitage of the Melody of Silence, located in the Causses du Quercy in the heart of the Lot department, where she organises sesshins once a season.

In May 2009, she performed the shusso (first monk) ceremony with Genshu Imamura Roshi in Japan, at the temple known as Kongo-in.
