Sesshin or intensive retreats

In Zen Buddhism, intensive meditation retreats are called sesshins, which literally means ‘to touch the mind’.

These retreats are open to everyone. They provide an opportunity for novices and experienced practitioners alike to dive into the heart of Zen meditation and experience daily life in a temple of the Sôtô Zen tradition for a few days.

During the sesshins, which generally last from two to seven days, there are four daily sessions of zazen (zen meditation). The days are structured around these meditation sessions. You also take part in ceremonies, rituals and samu, voluntary participation for the community. Meals are, for the most part, taken in silence.

The setting of a Zen monastery allows practitioners to devote themselves entirely to the practice of zazen, without having to worry about organisation.

Certified teachers lead the sesshins. They give teachings on meditation and the Dharma (the doctrine of the Buddha) and offer practitioners the opportunity to ask questions. This is called the mondo, a question-and-answer session in the dojo.
